Critical Role Season Four Introduces the Soldiers Table

From the very beginning of the fourth campaign, new Dungeon Master Brennan Mulligan has kept viewers on edge with rich lore, a wide array of characters, and a exciting storyline showcasing celestial beings, demons, and dark forces increasing in power within Dol-Makjar.

Note: Revealing details for the third episode of the new season are included.

The Soldiers Table Introduced

The third episode finished on a huge suspense moment and introduced the premier party of characters who will branch out from the central cast to undertake their separate journey, separate from the additional parties.

The Soldiers table features Teor Pridesire (played by the voice actor), the nimble rogue (the talented performer), the fierce warrior (Whitney Moore), the cleric (Sam Riegel), and Kattigan Vale (the actor).

The Reason for Division

Considering 13 cast members, it was evident from the start that maintaining everyone at one table would be impossible.

Hence, the first four episodes of Campaign 4 serve as an Introduction, intertwining the personal journeys before dividing into three distinct groups: Soldiers, Planners, and Seekers.

Characteristics of the Combat Party

According to the Dungeon Master, the combat-focused party is for adventurers who are drawn to a classically intense fight-heavy narrative style where diplomatic options are few and far between.

Initially, characters like the hesitant healer Wicander Halovar might look out of place, but the actions of episode 3 show why these particular heroes are best suited for the Soldiers table.

Motivations for Departure

For one thing, the party understands precisely where to go next after a brutal opening clash with the antagonists.

A former ally of Thjazi Fang—whose demise started the narrative’s action—manipulated the foes for his selfish purposes, entering Thjazi’s hideout, attacking the rogue, and swiping all the magical artifacts to auction.

The traitor then cleared his obligations and escaped to a fortified location in the northern region, north of the urban center, with Cyd Pridesire pursuing him.

Personal Motivations

Secondly, each character has a specific drive to exit Dol-Makjar:

  • Thimble, as Thjazi’s partner and best friend, desires retribution.
  • Kattigan is familiar with the northern area and advises that it is a dangerous environment.
  • Tyranny and The healer, having resisted his family’s wishes to kill Teor and instead saved him, have no safe haven.
  • However, their position as important members in the powerful family could assist the party access locations they typically wouldn’t be able to.
  • Furthermore, The grateful character vowed a eternal obligation to The savior for his deliverance and will now follow him wherever.

Wanted and Hunted

Lastly, all of them are hunted by the powers that control the setting for a range of causes, making lingering locally too risky:

  • Thimble and Kattigan are notorious outlaws.
  • Tyranny and The cleric defied the influential house and the horde of evil beings they are partnered with.
  • The fighter is marked for death by the clan.

This results in them few options but to head to Timmony in pursuit of the traitor.

Upcoming Developments

Based on the latest episode’s post-show segment, we learn that the combat party will be absent in the upcoming installment, leaving the remaining eight cast members to form the Explorers and Schemers parties.

Fans can expect learning which adventurers will be in which group in Campaign 4’s last Overture episode, streaming live on October 24.
